The Evolution of the Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxy Population from Redshift

چکیده
We use redshift observations of two deep 1.4 GHz fields to probe the evolution of the bright end of the radio galaxy luminosity function to z = 1.5. We show that the number of galaxies with radio power that would correspond locally to an ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIG) evolves rapidly over this redshift range. The optical spectra and X-ray luminosities are used to refine this result by separating the sources with clear active galactic nucleus (AGN) signatures from those that may be dominated by star formation. Both populations show extremely rapid evolution over this redshift range. We find that the number of sources with ULIG radio power and no clear AGN signatures evolves as (1 + z). Spitzer and ISO Galaxy Counts in the Mid-Infrared
Galaxy source counts that simultaneously fit the deep mid-infrared surveys at 24 microns and 15 microns made by the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) respectively are presented for two phenomenological models. The models are based on starburst and luminous infrared galaxy dominated populations. Both models produce excellent fits to the counts in both wavebands and...
متن کاملOn the fate of gas in ultraluminous infrared galaxies at low and high redshift
It is often suggested that the distant galaxies recently identified in 850-μm surveys with the SCUBA bolometer array on the JCMT Telescope are high-redshift analogues to local ultraluminous infrared galaxies, based on their similar spectral energy distributions and luminosities. We show that these two populations of objects must differ in at least one fundamental way from each other. This asser...
متن کاملEffects of galaxy mergers on the faint IRAS source counts and the background
Binary merging constitutes a complementary mode of galaxy evolution to the canonical hierarchical clustering theory. This merger-driven evolution not only influences the galaxy mass distribution function, but may drive the main galactic activity cycles, such as starbursts and the activity in the nuclei (AGNs). In this paper, we use galaxy aggregation dynamics together with a possible merger-dri...
متن کاملThe View of Galaxy Formation from Hawaii: Seeing the Dark Side of the Universe
The strength of the submillimeter background light shows directly that much of the energy radiated by star formation and AGN is moved to far infrared wavelengths. However, it is only as this background at 850 µm has been resolved with direct submillimeter imaging that we have seen that it is created by a population of ultraluminous (or near ultraluminous) infrared galaxies (ULIGs) which appear ...
متن کاملEvidence that FeLoBALs may signify the transition between an ultraluminous infrared galaxy and a quasar
We present mid/far-infrared photometry of nine FeLoBAL QSOs, taken using the Spitzer space telescope. All nine objects are extremely bright in the infrared, with rest-frame 1-1000μm luminosities comparable to those of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies. Furthermore, a significant fraction of the infrared emission from many, and possibly all of the sample is likely to arise from star formation, wit...
